In this series of free lunchtime lectures Dr Michael Murphy identifies tips, tricks and tactics behind major music icons. Michael also looks at how creative, do-it-yourself approaches can help artists build distinctive careers in an increasingly competitive industry.
The series is open to all and welcomes anyone interested in music, creativity, and how the industry works.

About Dr Michael Mary Murphy
Dr Michael Mary Murphy was part of Dublin’s small DIY/punk music scene during the 1980s. He wrote for fanzines, helped to organize gigs and worked in his Dún Laoghaire’s Exiles record shop. In 1989 he was hired by Richard Branson’s Virgin record label in London. Soon after he was head-hunted by the Imago record label in New York owned by Terry Ellis, who had previously founded Chrysalis records. In New York he worked with acts including Henry Rollins. He subsequently founded his own music management company and was personal manager for artists on each of the five major labels. He writes about the music industry, punk, youth subculture and Dungeons and Dragons. He lectures at IADT Dún Laoghaire. His co-authored book with Jim Rogers, Sounds Irish, Acts Global: Explaining the Success of Ireland’s Popular Music Industry (Equinox) was released in 2024. His book, Pop Music Management: Lessons from the Managers of Number One Albums, was released in 2025.
